About Me

I'm married and have 3 children.  Four of us suffer from various allergies and two of the kids have asthma.  For this reason, I'm a bit obsessed with nutrition and organic food.  The best way to get organic food?  Grow it yourself.  I have a tiny vegetable garden out back, 7'x7' where the sun is gradually being blocked out by an encroaching oak tree.  I also have a small herb garden on the opposite side of the backyard which is losing sunlight to a maple tree.  I refuse to cut down the trees, but I try to prune back the branches in such a way to let in more sunlight.  I also have a few blackberry bushes, some rhubarb, 3-4 pots of bell peppers, and one of those apple trees that grows 5 different varieties of apples.  The only thing I use in my garden is my own compost, occasionally supplementing some bagged manure (this kind does not smell at all).

Even though I've been gardening for well over 20 years, I'm constantly learning something new.  In my twenties, I lavished my garden with chemical fertilizers and didn't hesitate to use weed killer on my lawn.  The thought of using those products now makes me cringe.  And one of the best upsides to organic gardening is that it's less work.  I'm always to trying to find an easier, smart way to gardening.  Hope you enjoy reading about my journey.
